Back Track...
Ok so the last time I blogged was like what two weeks ago?! Well I just got my internet hooked up... FINALLY... yesterday... and anyway I've been back in Melbourne for like 3 weeks now and doing summer course in uni... still staying in the same place... O'Connell... might as well since it's just so difficult moving again... erm what else... went bowling twice with Sonja and Kris... did pretty well the second time scored 121 and 123 which is pretty much my "usual" score... what else... oh yes Australian Open tennis is on!!! Oh yeah!!! There's been some amazing tennis... and I'm totally hooked on it... Looking at the draw now it's Serena Williams vs. Nicole Vaidisova and the other one is Maria Sharapova/Anna Chakvetadze vs. Kim Clijsters/Martina Hingis for women singles semis... probably Kim Clijsters vs. Serena Williams for finals I reckon... Clijsters is really playing some amazing tennis and is her final Aussie Open so probably wants it the most... As for the men singles semis... Roger Federer/Tommy Robredo vs. Marty Fish/Andy Roddick and Tommy Haas/Nikolay Davydenko vs. Fernando Gonzalez/Rafael Nadal... Andy is playing right now is looking very likely to get through... so I would like Andy to get past Federer as well but it'll be very tough... but it's looking to be a Federer vs. Nadal final... although Gonzalez is really playing well as well... Hmmm tough... It'll be interesting to see what happens...

A Change...
Well it's half past the first week of semester two... I'm actually really happy to be back in uni... I don't know how to describe it but I can feel something very different about myself... And as for those who don't already know... I have discontinued my double degree in engineering (civil)/commerce and I'm just doing commerce now... Okay if you are shocked and you think that I have always like civil and like it more than commerce... it seems not... Anyway I know that I'm making the right decision because I'm very happy... so don't worry... and besides I really couldn't handle doing both together... It's all good... I just have to decide now whether to do Introductory Econometrics or Quantitative Methods II... That is why I'm going to tomorrow's QM2 lecture to find out what it's like... Wish me luck...

Coach of the Tournament: KLINSMANN Juergen (GER) - I think what he has done for the German team is truely remarkable. German football is now much more entertaining.

Player of the Tournament: ZIDANE Zinedine (FRA) - Led the French past a rather unconvincing second placement in the group stage to the final. Has been in inspirational form even at the age of 34.

Favourite Team of the Tournament: Deutschland (GER) - Even though the did not make it to the final, they definitely did not disappoint their fans. They faught hard till the very end. Good work Deutschland!

Least Favourite Team of the Tournament: Portugal (POR) - Undoubtedly with the worst discipline in the tournament after the match against Nederland (NED). Never without some feeble attempt to get a freekick or penalty by diving. They should be ashamed.

20th Birthday... A Day To Remember...
Chris, Arne, Doug, Fiona & Julia
Pre-Party
The Couple (Ange & Arne)
Me, Julia, Doug & Fiona
Tim, Me & Julia

My birthday celebration pretty much kicked off at about 9.00pm the night before (8th April)... My friends at the O'Connell Residence had long decided that we were to go out "clubbing", with the only problem of not knowing where to go and that we had an underaged person with us... but at 9.00pm the "pre-party" started at home... I didn't have any drinks but there were some people who were doing "Jeigermeister" shots... it was crazy... by the time we left it was about 11.00pm or so... We kinda decided to go check out GPO L2 but when we got there the line was just too long so we decided to go somewhere else... that was pretty much when the excitement started... two people in the group started some innocent back scrathing and hand fiddling which was just the build up for what was to come... Anyway so then we decided to do to Ding Dong... no idea who thought of that... so then we walked... and amazingly everyone got in... then we found out there was going to be a live band performance by some indi band called bootleg... They started at about 12 something... and went for about an hour... then later we danced for a little while until about 2 which was when we left... and throughout the whole time... the two people who were fiddling started some real hot "action"... and when we left they went off on their own... the rest of us went to Hungry Jacks for a snack and stopped by Strike where the guys had a game of pool and air-hockey... After that we went straight home... by then it was maybe close to 3am... When we got home... some really crazy drama happened which I think I should not include but it was bad... Then the girls went up to Fiona's room to just sit and talk... by the time we all got to sleep... it was about 6am... When I finally woke up it was maybe 12pm... went down made lunch and just basically at around talking... then later at night we had a girls-only dinner at La Prochetta which was 2 rounds away... And that was basically it... Doesn't sound like much but only if you were there... or maybe not... It was certainly the most eventful birthday I've since my birth (Haha)... Hence I've left behind the teen years now... Cheers...

Year Of The Dog... Bow Wow...
Happy Chinese New Year 新年快乐 恭喜发财!!!

aka Lunar New Year to those who celebrate in Korea and Japan...!!! Pretty dull for me this year... so sad I didn't get to celebrate this year... I guess that's my punishment for not studying hard... But this time around will be totally different... I just got back my mid sem results... 39/40 woohoo!!! Man I can't believe I lost that 1 mark... I checked the answer 3 times and finally after I handed the paper in I was counting it in my head and I realised I had made a mistake... sooooooooooooo sad...!!!!!!!!! But anyway still a good result... :)

The Australian Open has finally come to an end and who else but Roger Federer is the champion... but Marcos Baghdatis was the people's champion... Hooray for Baghdatis for making things fun and interesting!!! Only his first grand slam final ever at the age of 20... I would say he did a pretty decent job... But kudos to Federer for bringing his A game back in the 3rd set... 1st and 2nd were pretty shaky... I liked the fact that he cried when he received the trophy... it's nice to see emotions... :p

I feel a good year ahead... hopefully it will be... Cheers...

Australia Day!!
Australians all let us rejoice
For we are young and free
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea:
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page let every stage
Advance Australia fair,
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands,
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands,
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share,
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.

Yes that is the Australian national anthem... and today is Australia Day where every Australian is out have a barbe (al least according to Sam Kekovic they should) or picnic or watching the Aussie Open... Btw yes I do know how to sing the Aussie anthem... as well as Waltzing Matilda but that one has weird lyrics in it... Swagman... Billabong... Anyway... There's been many debates on whether or not the anthem should be changed because some say it is not suitable to reflect the current Australia or something... At least that's a better excuse than Malaysia wanting to change the word "Negaraku" to "Malaysiaku" just because it wasn't written by a Malaysian... as a matter of fact in the beginning some people thought Waltzing Matilda should have been the anthem but it was rejected because the song is about a druken guy who steals or something... I'm not sure... but Waltzing Matilda is I would say to Aussies like the Assunta school song is to every Assuntarian... we just love to sing it...!!! And also I would just like to mention that I will be moving into my new place tomorrow... YAY!!!! Thank you again to Vin Li and the other people at Villiers for being so nice as to let me crash there... So G'day to all... "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie" "Oi! Oi! Oi!"...

Melbourne Report
I've been back in Melbourne for 3 days now... When I got there I nearly had a heart attack... it was drizzling and I found out that I couldn't get into Vin Li's place, which she is supposed to be lending me, because she didn't have the key for the gate... no worries... the building next to hers which belongs to the Petronas guys, as usual, is opened... so I kept my things there while I settled other things... Turns out that one of the Petronas guy's parents is using the girls' place... so now I staying in that guy's place... Rafiq I think that's how you spell his name... but I think he moved in with his parents and I'm not sure what the other guy's name is and there was another girl who is from Ballarat, Elani (no sure how you spell it), but she had seemed to disappear... So now I have no idea what on earth is going in that place but I'm just hanging around while finding a place ASAP!!! Classes have started... feels like usual except it the same subject every hour... Yeah and I can't stand not having internet... The computer I'm using right now... the Uni's computer... is totally weird... all the punctuation keys on the keyboard are out of place as in when I try to type @, " comes out instead... to type @ I have to use "Shift""Insert"... is that not ridiculous?!?! Arghhh... it's taking me forever to get this entry done... Vin if you read this... no worries... I'm just glad I have a place... where ever it is... All for now... Cheers...

Happy New Year!
Retrospect: 2005 started off to a bad start for quite a lot of people... namely due to bombings and the Tsunami incident... But it was a relativel good start for me... I managed to get into Melbourne University to study civil engineering and commerce... Things looked bright and hopeful... but as the year passed by... things got worse and worse... many things happened most of which I can't and don't want to talk about... but as it reached the end of the year... I felt like I was the stupidest person in the world and I'm just ruining everything...

Resolution: Resolutions never work for me... mainly because I haven't made one serious enough for me to keep and partly because I am the lazy arse I am... But this coming year I will already be twenty... I'm not a teenager anymore... so it's really time to stop mucking around and get serious... All my friends already have... and so my resolution is to get off my fat arse and get things done and get it done right!! I foresee a tough year ahead so those of you who know me... pray for me... *wink*

And so... good luck to my friends who are waiting for their STPM results... Good luck to those who are waiting for the university of their choice to offer them a place... Good luck to my fellow comrades in university (college) life... hang in there... and lastly good luck to the world so that it may be less damaged than it was the year before... Cheers...

Happy New Year!

Summer Trip 2005: Hong Kong
My third trip to Hong Kong if memory serves me right... Actually the main reason for the trip this time is to bring the babies (my younger siblings) to Disneyland... and Hong Kong is the closest... Left on Wednesday morning and got there in the afternoon...

Arrival:
Took the Airport Express to Kowloon Station before taking the shuttle to our hotel... We still stayed in Kowloon of course, but this time was Shangri-La in Tsim Sha Tsui East which overlooks the straight between Hong Kong Island and Mainland... After putting down our stuff in the rooms we went for some wonton noodles... my dad's favourite... Personally I'm not very fond of the Hongky wonton noodle... I prefer the Malaysian one... but the wontons there are better...

Day One: Disneyland
After hearing the many rumours about Disneyland Hong Kong we decided to try and avoid the weekends, the busiest time... It was quite a journey there itself... from Tsim Sha Tsui Station we took the Tsuen Wan Line to Lai King Station then change to the Tung Chung Line to Sunny Bay and finally changing to the Disneyland Resort Line... the train for that line is so cute... the windows are in the shape of the famous three circle Mickey head shape as well as the supports on the handrail... it's also decorated with Disney character statuets... Even on a Thursday there were quite a lot of people... mostly tour groups from China... a lot of old folks... More on Disneyland itself later... the whole day I would say wasn't really that great... spent most of the time in queues... mainly for the babies who wanted to take pictures with the characters... the lines were sooooo freaking long because for some reason all the old people wanted a photo with the characters... and I we didn't really get around to many of the few rides... So yeah no a good experience... Stayed for the fireworks which was quite good... Verdict... even Paris was better...

Day Two: Shopping
We crossed over to the Island... the day started off great with some very satisfying dim sum in Maxim's Place in City Hall... much better than the dim sum from the previous day... Then off we went to shop... just basically walk around... look see look see... buy whatever... so a very painful day for my feet...

Day Three: Ocean Park
Dim sum for breakfast again... this time at Maxim's in Hennessy Center... not as good as the one in City Hall and bad service as well... way too over crowded... Going to Ocean Park was a total and utter surprise... I didn't know we were going to there until we got there... Haha... I had been there a long time ago but I really couldn't remember much... amazingly there were mosre things there than I had "remembered"... I think the rides there are quite reasonable but the people might want to improve on their animal shows... not very impressive...

Day Four: More Shopping
Deviating from dim sum... we went to have breakfast at this coffee house place, Australia Dairy Co. on Parkes Street in Jordan... They are famous for their "dan dan" aka Chinese egg custard... After that another walking spree... which led to Fa Yuen Street in the area of Lady's Market in Mong Kok... If you don't know... this is THE place to buy shoes, mostly sneakers... and for very low prices... And at night we went around night markets... Another painful day for the feet... The weather was also getting colder than I expcted...

Day Five: Disneyland Again
A very cold day... we decided to give it another shot hoping for less people on Monday and also planning to go there at an earlier time... But to our dismay... there were even more people than on Thursday... But this time we decided to skip the shows and the photo taking so we managed more rides... we even managed the Winnie The Pooh ride which had a waiting time of about 90 minutes at the time we were in queue... this time we didn't stay for the fireworks to avoid the crowd going back...

Departure:
Well so that was the trip in summary... the flight back was one of the worst in recent times... the cabin pressure was a little off because it was the first in a long long time since I had ear-popping problem and the landing was terrible...

The Ups:
Love the hotel... best place to be... very comfy beds and love the fact that they have both shower and tub... They've also got a whole lot of TV channels which includes BBC Prime... which I just have to tell about this episode of "The Weakest Link" that they showed... if you don't know it's a quiz show... and one of the question was "What is the full title of the fourth installment of the Harry Potter books?" and the guy answered "The Wizard of Doom..."... Man that was the stupidest and funniest thing I've ever heard on a quiz show...!!! Anyway back to the hotel room... It has quite nice features... includes connection ports for internet and printer to your laptop... DVD player... weighing scale... bath crystals... I especially like their cotton wools... And also I've been dying for some dim sum for a very very long time... and yum!!! Love the dim sum!!! Hehe... though I didn't manage to get some "zha leong" this time...

The Downs:
Air pollution!!! God it's so difficult to breathe in Hong Kong... it's a wonder how people can live so old there and how little children don't develope brain damage... Also very conjested... like London... but in London there are less sky scrapers so it does not feel as claustrophobic...

Insomnia!!
You know... only like maybe 6 months ago... I could just fall asleep the moment I lied on the bed... but NOW... it's like tossing and turning... arrggghhh... and I know why... I keep thinking... I can't stop... Thinking about exam... thinkig about arrangements for next year... thinking about why two fire engines have stopped at the next apartmentwith lights flashing and sirens ringing... wondering why drivers rive strangely at night... and all sorts of other rubbish... Anyone with a solution?!

Bridging A Gap: Balsa Wood Bridge
This was one of the best assignment I've ever got... and the testing even though rather sad was the best part... For Introduction To Civil Engineering, we were given an assignment to build a bridge for a span of 750mm. We were given 3 planks of balsa wood (the softest wood on earth... or at least I think so...) 1 is 3mm thick and 2 were 1.5 mm thick, as well as 3 pieces of bearing plates (harder pieces for carrying load), and a stick of glue... The bridge was then to be tested to see how strong it was... We worked in groups of 4... My group chose to build a simple truss bridge with rectangular hollow supports which carry the load to the sides... Here what it looked like...

The last picture shows how it failed... basically it's a local failure... which means the angles of our support weren't big enough and the joint at the top wasn't strong enough and buckled under the pressure... as you was see the supports are still very much intact and undisturb... a shame... we put so much effort into it... that was the sad part... My group's bridge was able to stand 60lb/27.2kg... not too bad... The overall performance of task gave a lowest of 10/4.5 and highest was 90/40.8 and it was still undamaged... Here are most of the bridges from the task with their maximum strength (++ means they are still undamaged)...
